FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH

If you are seeking information about a baptism, marriage or burial of someone in our parish, we have a volunteer archivist who can help you. Please contact Viv Liles 029 20712466 vivien@liles.org.uk

Cost: There’s no fixed charge, but a donations are encouraged - please see our Giving Page, where you can donate via BACS

Registers - we have copies of historical registers, but the originals have been deposited with Glamorgan Archives. They can also be accessed online at Find My Past and Ancestry (subscriptions required or visit a library who often have free access).

OUR CHURCHYARDS

There are churchyards with burials at St Augustine’s, St Dochdwy’s, Old St Lawrence at Lavernock and Old St James at Leckwith. We hold records for most of these if you are searching for a burial. However, many people were buried with no headstone and sometimes the headstones have become unreadable or broken. Sometimes it is impossible to identify a grave site.

If visiting a churchyard, please take care of uneven ground and hidden kerbstones. St Augustine’s is also managed for its wildlife habitat, so not all graves will be accessible. If this causes you a problem, please get in touch with the Parish Office.

St Augustine’s churchyard mapping project

We have been fortunate to take part in a pilot project to map and photograph the graves at

St Augustine’s, in conjunction with Atlantic Geomatics, the Church in Wales and Heritage Lottery Fund. We have now matched the photos to the graves and they can be accessed using this link. Thanks go to our volunteers Linda Guilfoyle and Viv Liles for their work on this.
